UV Index 🇭🇷Croatia

Croatia stretches between roughly 42.4° and 46.5°N along the eastern Adriatic, combining a 1,777 km mainland coastline studded with more than 1,200 islands, the rugged Dinaric Alps that rise to 1,831 m at Dinara, and the fertile Pannonian plains of Slavonia in the northeast. This crescent-shaped territory crosses three distinct climate zones — Mediterranean on the coast, alpine in the karst interior, and continental inland — within only a few hundred kilometres, producing sharp gradients in cloud cover, altitude, and surface reflectivity that directly shape ultraviolet exposure across the country.

The Dalmatian coast and outer islands receive some of the Adriatic's most intense ultraviolet radiation: Mediterranean clear-sky summers routinely push the UV index to 9–10 at Dubrovnik, Hvar, and Split between June and August, amplified by sea-surface reflection of around 5–8% across the open Adriatic. The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ) publishes a daily UV index forecast that captures this coastal maximum alongside altitude-boosted readings in the Dinaric karst, where elevation gains roughly 6–8% UV per 1,000 m. The dry, cold bura katabatic wind that descends from the Velebit and Dinara ranges scours cloud cover from the coast within hours, leaving cloudless skies that drive some of the highest clear-sky UV doses recorded along the eastern Adriatic.

Croatia sits at #164 of 191 in the WHO's global ambient-UV ranking with about 1,976 J/m² of average daily UV, around the 14th percentile worldwide.
