UV Index Luxembourg

According to the WHO, the average daily ambient ultraviolet radiation in Luxembourg is 1,687 J/m² (joules per square metre).

UV radiation overview

Luxembourg is a small landlocked country in Western Europe lying between roughly 49.4° and 50.2°N, giving the sun a relatively low maximum elevation even at the summer solstice. Terrain is modest, rising from the Moselle valley near 130m to Buurgplaatz at about 559m in the Oesling. The climate is oceanic with continental tendencies, dominated by Atlantic fronts that bring frequent cloud cover. Together, the mid-latitude sun-angle, persistent cloudiness and low elevations keep ambient UV in a moderate Western-European regime year-round.

What makes Luxembourg distinctive for UV climatology is its extreme compactness: only about 82km from north to south and 57km east to west, so latitude-driven differences in UV are negligible across the country. The Oesling plateau in the north sits a few hundred metres higher than the Gutland in the south, producing only minor elevation-related UV gradients. Day-to-day UV variability is instead governed by Benelux and western-German weather systems and by stratospheric ozone fluctuations over the region, with MeteoLux issuing daily UV-index forecasts during the summer half-year.

Luxembourg sits at #182 of 191 in the WHO's global ambient-UV ranking with about 1,687 J/m² of average daily UV, around the 5th percentile worldwide.
