UV Index Montenegro

UV radiation overview

Montenegro lies between roughly 41.9° and 43.6° north on the southeastern Adriatic, a compact Balkan country where the sea meets the Dinaric Alps within a few kilometers. The coastline stretches from Herceg Novi past the Bay of Kotor to Ulcinj near the Albanian border, while the interior rises sharply into karst plateaus and high mountains. Zla Kolata in the Prokletije range reaches 2,534 meters, the country's highest point, and the relief between sea level and the summits is among the steepest in Europe.

The Bay of Kotor is one of the southernmost fjord-like inlets in Europe, its steep limestone walls funneling sunlight onto the water and amplifying UV exposure through strong sea-surface albedo. Inland, Durmitor rises above 2,000 meters and anchors a national park and ski region where thinner air and seasonal snow cover push UV intensity well above coastal values. The Institute of Hydrometeorology and Seismology of Montenegro (IHMS) issues UV index information, and the country's karst topography limits aerosol mixing, leaving skies unusually clear.
