UV Index Romania

According to the WHO, the average daily ambient ultraviolet radiation in Romania is 2,071 J/m² (joules per square metre).

UV radiation overview

Romania spans roughly 43.6° to 48.3° north latitude in southeastern Europe, a mid-latitude band that gives it a strong seasonal contrast in solar elevation and ambient ultraviolet radiation. The Carpathian arc bisects the country, separating the Transylvanian basin from the Wallachian and Moldavian plains, while the Black Sea coast and the low-lying Danube delta form the eastern and southeastern edge. This combination of latitude, terrain and sea exposure produces a broad UV regime, with clear summer days delivering noticeably higher noon UV than the long, overcast winters.

A distinctive Romanian feature is the elevation gain along the Făgăraș range, where Moldoveanu reaches 2,544 metres and thinner air plus frequent snow cover boost summertime UV well above lowland values. Along the Black Sea coast at Constanța, clear-sky summer noon UV index values typically reach 7 to 8, and the National Meteorological Administration (ANM, Meteo România) publishes daily UV index forecasts for the country. The Transylvanian basin sits higher and is more often cloudy than the sun-exposed Wallachian plain, while the Danube delta at near sea level combines low elevation with strong water and sand reflection.

Romania sits at #163 of 191 in the WHO's global ambient-UV ranking with about 2,071 J/m² of average daily UV, around the 15th percentile worldwide.
