UV Index Slovakia
According to the WHO, the average daily ambient ultraviolet radiation in Slovakia is 1,795 J/m² (joules per square metre).
UV radiation overview
Slovakia is a landlocked Central European country spanning roughly 47.7° to 49.6° north, straddling the Western Carpathians and the Pannonian Basin. The High Tatras crown the north, culminating in Gerlachovský štít at 2,655 metres, while the Danubian Lowland in the southwest sits below 200 metres around Bratislava and Komárno. This compact territory packs nearly 2,500 metres of vertical relief into about 49,000 square kilometres, producing strongly varied climate and solar-exposure regimes between alpine ridges and warm continental plains.
The High Tatras are the highest segment of the entire Carpathian arc, and their snow-covered ridges sharply amplify wintertime UV through albedo while thinner air at altitude lets more UV-B reach the surface. The Lomnický štít observatory at 2,634 metres, operated within the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) network, has hosted long-running atmospheric and solar-radiation measurements that feed national UV monitoring. SHMÚ publishes a daily UV index forecast, with peak clear-sky summer values driven by the dry continental highs that settle over the Danubian basin.
Slovakia sits at #175 of 191 in the WHO's global ambient-UV ranking with about 1,795 J/m² of average daily UV, around the 7th percentile worldwide.
